Applications now open for Strategic Priority Grants

Coloured bubbles represent how the plans in the 10-Year Plan relate to each other and council's 4 goals.

We’re keen to hear from community groups or social enterprises helping to make a positive impact in our city. Our Strategic Priority Grants are now open and we’re seeking applications from community-driven organisations looking to turn their projects into reality.

Strategic Priority Grants provide three years of funding for community-led projects, activities or services. They're designed to encourage community leadership of solutions. Around $1.6 million in community funding will be allocated to successful community organisations through Strategic Priority Grant funding this financial year.

In the previous round from 2022-2025, we had 67 applications, and 42 received funding. A list of those funded in the last round is available on our website.

Applicants for this round of funding will be notified of a decision on their application by March 2025.

Successful applicants will receive three years of funding, starting from July 1 2025, to support innovative projects, activities, or services that align with the Council’s vision: Small city benefits, big city ambition.

Chair of our Community Committee Lorna Johnson says the grants are an excellent way to support organisations within the city that are providing a much needed service.

“This program is not just about funding; it's about fostering leadership and ownership to drive meaningful change. Who knows better what our community needs than the community itself? Those who are already out there doing the mahi and making a difference, supporting our people and our goal of creating connected and safe communities.”

We partner with community organisations to help deliver on our strategic goals to help our community. Elected members have voted to increase these grants by 10% each year over the next 3 years, to continue supporting community needs in view of current inflationary pressures, she says.

“Over the past three years, our Strategic Priority Grants have supported 42 community groups, delivering outstanding social, cultural, and environmental outcomes. Now, we’re keen to hear from any community organisation ready to help us make Palmerston North a more vibrant, safe and sustainable city.”

We are inviting applications from for-purpose organisations (formerly known as not-for-profits) based in Palmerston North, including social enterprises with a demonstrated social, cultural, or environmental mission where all profits are reinvested.

If you’d like advice on how apply for a grant, we’re holding a range of public drop-in sessions around the city. For more information on these, or to apply visit our Strategic Priority Grants page.

Applications close Monday 4 November 2024.

You can also come and have a chat about a range of funding opportunities at our Community Funding Expo at The Palmerston North Conference and Function Centre on Thursday 12 September from 1pm to 4pm. The event will showcase various funding opportunities and resources available for community initiatives.

The expo will bring together funders, organisations, and individuals dedicated to making a positive impact for our city. We are excited to feature keynote speaker Megan Thorn, a seasoned expert with nearly 25 years of experience in facilitation, training program development, and delivery. Megan has collaborated with diverse groups in corporate, government, and non-profit sectors across the globe. Her passion lies in empowering those who are truly making a difference in their communities.
