Our annual Māngai Atawhai – City Ambassadors programme starts this week and will be run in partnership with Youthline. Six new ambassadors will be out and about in the streets in and around Te Marae o Hine - The Square, ready to share some fun and whanaungatanga in the city centre.

One of the Lead Ambassadors, Sammy Robertson says the programme is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the things that make Palmy great.

“Te Marae o Hine is literally the heart of the city — a stunning space to host activities, events, our community and visitors. Our goal is to create a space that everyone can engage with, from rangatahi and whānau to businesses and community groups alike.”

She says the ambassadors will be based at the UNBOX every day, offering activities for those looking for something to do, as well as spaces to chill and relax.

“We’re excited to introduce whānau picnic lunches on Saturdays and Slow Sundays in the Square with everyone welcome to come and enjoy some music and good vibes together.

“Youthline will also be hosting a drop-in for rangatahi, and we're working on finalising some exciting collaborations with the local community. If you have any ideas or want to collaborate, come down and have a chat. We are here for our community, and we want to make Palmy proud and summer awesome!”Mayor Grant Smith says the programme has been funded this year as part of our Economic Development Plan, due to the role it plays in making the city centre a welcoming and lively space throughout summer.

“Our City Ambassadors play a vital role in supporting local businesses by encouraging visitors to relax and spend time in the city centre, enjoying its vibrant atmosphere and exploring the many different shops, cafes and entertainment available within easy strolling distance.”

He says the programme also aims to promote inclusivity and foster an age-friendly environment, offering the chance to enjoy some spontaneous fun with a range of recreational activities for all ages.

“We encourage people of all ages to spend some time in our beautiful city centre having a chat with our friendly ambassadors and trying their hand at one of the many fun activities on offer. They’ll be there during the summer holidays for anyone who wants to know what’s happening around town, needs directions or wants to test their skills on our giant Jenga or Connect Four. All are welcome to come and enjoy some free summer fun and companionship.”

Our City Ambassadors will be holding weekly events which anyone can take part in. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for upcoming events. The programme kicks off on 21 December and will run until 7 February 2025.
