“It’s a privilege to work with and encourage local talent.” – Guy Donaldson

Guy Donaldson is a cornerstone of Palmerston North’s classical music scene. Since his first connection with the city in 1975, Guy has been a tireless champion for music education and performance. Happily for the city, he also regarded his work as his hobby.

A career music teacher, lecturer, tutor and musician who has helped a number of local performers to national and international success, Guy has willingly applied his expertise, flair and passion in a voluntary capacity. Here, he has wholeheartedly served community groups as a music director, choir master, conductor, musical arranger, soloist, accompanist, chamber musician, concert convenor, adjudicator, reviewer, speaker, patron, music mentor and coach, as well as taking leadership roles on organisational committees.

Guy’s decades long involvement with Musica Viva Manawatū, the Palmerston North Choral Society, and the Renaissance Singers are examples of his prodigious community input. This is alongside his invaluable contributions to the Manawatū Sinfonia, Manawatū Youth Orchestra, Manawatū youth choirs and the Manawatū Whanganui Region of the New Zealand Choral Society, among many other local and regional groups.

Guy’s other signature community legacies are the popular Te Manawa Art Gallery Concert Series that he inherited, and its even more popular successor, The Globe Sunday Matinee Concert Series that offers accessible entry by koha. These and Guy’s other numerous ‘pro bono’ activities have significantly enriched the local music and performing arts community.

Recognised for his dedication, leadership and positive influence, Guy’s musical mana means he has been able to invite notable guest practitioners to Palmerston North for the benefit of audiences and performers alike. He has arranged young performers’ scholarships and organised various music workshops to foster up-and-coming talent. His knowledge, energy and enthusiasm has inspired choirs and musical ensembles, alongside countless vocalists and instrumentalists.

Whether he’s introducing new musical works or rediscovering old ones, Guy’s concerts, recitals and events continue to provide opportunities for artists to perform and to grow, and for local audiences to engage in and enjoy. His generous commitment has contributed immeasurably to Palmerston North’s vibrant music culture.
