“This city has been my life; to get the best out of yourself, get involved in your community” - Stephen Parsons
Stephen Parsons has been a prominent figure in Palmerston North for over 40 years, known for his dedication to the travel and tourism industry and for his extensive community service.
His sustained commitment reflects a passion for making a difference and for getting involved in the community he loves.
For his outstanding community work over 47 years as a Rotary Club of Palmerston North member, Steve was made a Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary’s highest form of recognition. This year he played a major part in celebrating the club’s 100-year anniversary.
Steve also took on significant roles in promoting Manawatū sports, contributing his time, business knowledge and sponsorship to various sporting organisations. Among them, Marist Rugby, Manawatū Jets basketball, Manawatū Netball, and to the Stephen Parsons Secondary School Sports Awards.
An original and enduring supporter of the Arohanui Hospice through fundraising and travel talks, Steve was also a member of the Regent Theatre Trust Board for 11 years, assisting numerous productions on and off stage.
A founding member of the Palmerston North Defence Heritage Advisory Group, Steve works to preserve and honour military history. This includes his involvement in the New Zealand Poppy Places Trust project that acknowledges wartime service and sacrifice with poppy logos on street signs and at significant sites.
Steve's contributions extend to education and multicultural initiatives. He has supported IPU for 34 years and was the original sponsor of the Palmerston North International Festival, now The Festival of Cultures.
Diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, Steve is an active member of the Parkinson’s New Zealand Manawatū Support group, organising the Red Tulip Walk to raise money and awareness while participating in speaking events and national activities. Despite his condition, he remains a mentor for local businesses and contributes to the New Zealand Travel Industry Mentor programme.
Steve epitomises the spirit of community service, combining creativity with a deep commitment to making a positive impact on Palmerston North.
His organisational skills, business acumen, generosity and the ability to make meaningful community connections are highly valued and widely appreciated.
