Thanks for saving water, Palmy!
Published on 12 February 2025
Palmy residents are making great progress in reducing water consumption this summer, with an overall average of 247 litres per person per day, compared to 273 litres per person per day at this time last year.
Mike Monaghan, Council's Three Waters Group Manager, says: "These efforts are helping to keep our dam levels consistently high, which means there is no immediate need for water restrictions for the whole city.
"However, with ongoing dry conditions, we encourage everyone to keep up voluntary water savings through the summer water use programme. Simple actions like watering gardens in the early morning or evening, fixing leaks, shorter showers and using water-efficient appliances make a big difference."

Longburn remains under level 2 water restrictions
Longburn remains under level 2 water restrictions, which were introduced on 23 January due to a critically low local water supply (Longburn's water supply comes from a local bore and is not currently connected to the citywide supply from the Turitea Dam).
Level 2 restrictions mean:
- Unattended hoses, sprinklers, and garden irrigation systems cannot be used.
- Handheld hoses are permitted only between 7pm and 9pm, following an alternating schedule ( even-numbered houses may water on even dates and odd-numbered houses on odd dates).
- Commercial activities requiring water are not restricted but operators are encouraged to minimise use or reschedule until restrictions are lifted.
Residents have been following these restrictions and have already helped reduce overnight water use from 1.3 litres per second to 0.25 litres per second, says Mr Monaghan. "But we need everyone in Longburn to continue their water conservation efforts, report and repair any leaks and be mindful of water use, especially at night."
We appreciate everyone doing their part this summer. Let’s keep working together!
