Commemorative seats and trees

Find out about donating a seat or tree to a Palmy park, cemetery or walkway. Use the form on this page to apply.

There are many reasons why people donate seats or trees. For example:

  • remembering a loved one
  • celebrating a special event like a golden wedding or a birth
  • leaving your family's mark on a favourite destination
  • a way for your community group or charitable organisation to dedicate something to the city.

You can donate a seat or tree in most of our parks and reserves

We have places throughout the city that could benefit from additional seating and trees. We will order and install or plant the seat or tree you're donating.

In some areas, it may be possible to choose a picnic table.

If you are donating a tree, our parks team will work with you to agree on a desirable species and location. Trees are always planted in winter to give them the best chance of growing strong and healthy, and will be at least 2m high.

We are happy to provide this opportunity for you to donate a seat or tree to:

  • parks and reserves – except Te Marae o Hine The Square
  • around play areas
  • some sportsfields
  • cemeteries
  • along walking tracks – except the Manawatū River Shared Pathway.

Cost

The cost of seats (including picnic tables) varies depending on the location and allocated seating design for that area. Prices range from $2,000 to $5,000. This includes the seat, installation and future maintenance.

The cost of trees varies depending on the species but is generally about $250. This includes a tree at least 2m high and all costs associated with planting and establishment, eg stakes and ties and watering for one summer.

Add a plaque to a seat or picnic table

If you supply a plaque to our specifications, we can fix it to your donated seat or table. Trees are not suitable for plaques.

The inscription on your plaque must be approved by our Parks Manager. There is space in the application form for you to submit your suggested words before you order the plaque. Please do not include dates.

  • 20cm across x 10cm high 
  • 15 to 25 words approved by Council Parks Manager (no dates).

How long will my donation last?

We can't guarantee your commemorative seat or tree will be there forever. Vandalism, reserve development and furniture renewal can all mean that your donation may need to be removed or replaced in the future. However if this happens we will endeavour to get in touch with you and relocate seats where possible.
