We’re reviewing the off-leash rules for dogs at Linklater Reserve

We know that our dogs are important members of our families. We’ve got more than 9000 registered dogs in our city, so we want to make sure the on-leash and off-leash rules at our largest dog exercise area are the right fit for our community.

In 2024, we received a request from some Kelvin Grove residents to take a look at our off-leash rules at Linklater Reserve and consider making parts of the reserve on-leash. The reason for the request was that sometimes dogs that are not properly controlled, can make it hard for other people to enjoy the park as well.

It’s important that all people in the community can fairly and safely access and use our public spaces, this includes our dog exercise areas. At the moment, all of the reserve is an off-leash dog exercise area, apart from the children’s play equipment which is prohibited to dogs.

We encourage responsible dog ownership and know this means keeping our dogs well exercised and well socialised, both for their wellbeing, and so they’re less likely to cause nuisance to the community.

We also know that Linklater Reserve is one of the most popular reserves in the city, so we want to make sure that it meets the needs of as many people as possible.

We need to know what the community thinks about making changes at Linklater

Making a change to the off-leash controls means we’d be looking at a process to update to our Dog Control Policy and our Dog Control Bylaw. So, before we begin this process, we'd like to know if you’d support making parts of Linklater Reserve on-leash for dogs.

We want to know how you like to use the reserve, and if you think making parts of it on-leash would make the park more enjoyable for everyone, or if you would prefer for it to stay as it is. You can let us know your thoughts by filling in the form below. We’ll use your feedback to inform advice for elected members to consider.

This feedback is only for Linklater Reserve, and doesn’t affect other areas of the city. If you’re ever unsure of where dogs need to be on leash, check out our map.
