Battery recycling

Recycle your batteries for free at our Ferguson Street Recycling Centre, Customer Service Centre, or at one of our libraries (Awapuni, Ashhurst, Central Library, Roslyn and Te Pātikitiki). You can also now drop off batteries at Horizons Regional Council’s Victoria Avenue office during working hours (AAA, AA, C, C and 9V household batteries only).

Staff will accept household quantities of old and unwanted batteries during opening hours only. Quantities over 2kg will incur a charge.

Batteries accepted for recycling

  • Alkaline batteries
  • Lithium and li-ion batteries
  • Carbon zinc batteries
  • Nickel cadmium batteries
  • Nickel metal hydride batteries
  • Lead-acid batteries

Examples include single use and rechargeable batteries such as AA, AAA, C, D and 9V batteries, batteries from handheld devices such as mobile phones, laptops, toys, torches, and those from cordless power tools, stereos and cars.

Why recycle batteries?

Council is committed to finding ways to reduce waste and our city's impact on the environment.

Batteries contain harmful chemicals and heavy metals that can pollute the environment. When batteries are recycled these metals can be recovered and used again.
