Drop your polystyrene off at Ferguson Street

Our Ferguson Street Recycling Centre accepts clean household polystyrene packaging during opening hours. This material is also known as Styrofoam (number 6, What do the plastic recycling numbers mean?) and is commonly used for packing computers, electronics, appliances and toys.

Once it’s dropped off, it gets taken to be recycled into picture frames and decorative mouldings.

Recycle your polystyrene for a small fee

The fee for recycling polystyrene is 70 cents per 100 grams. For instance, recycling the polystyrene from an average household printer would cost about $3.

We’ll weigh it when you come in.

We’ve opted for a user-pays system, similar to our other recycling services, rather than including this cost in your rates. This approach addresses feedback from residents, many of whom noted that not all households generate polystyrene waste.

Why should I recycle polystyrene?

Polystyrene is a problematic material that takes hundreds of years to breakdown in landfill. Despite 98% of it being air, it takes up a lot of space in landfills, and there it’s lightweight nature means it could easily be blown away into our natural environment.
