Council & City

Skilled Migrant Programme

This programme is a way for skilled migrants living in the city to gain quality local experience. It will place one person each quarter in paid work within our infrastructure unit.

The programme launches in 2020.

Council employees will mentor participants during the placement. You will gain hands-on experience working with real projects.

Examples of the work you might do include:

  • civil engineering
  • coordinating projects
  • asset management
  • administration
  • parks and development.

We will decide the type of work you do by discussions with you and the availability of project work and mentors.

The placements are short-term and there is no guarantee of ongoing work with Council. But you'll gain valuable local experience and a referee for securing future employment.

Eligibility for the Skilled Migrant Programme

The programme is open to anyone who meets all four of these criteria:

  • you have lived in Palmerston North for at least six months
  • you moved to New Zealand within the past 10 years
  • you have some existing relevant professional experience and qualifications
  • your visa conditions allow you to legally undertake the placement.

How to apply

Watch this space – we'll release information about how to apply in early 2020.

Why we created this programme

Council is a proud member of Welcoming Communities – Te Waharoa ki Ngā Hapori. We are committed to creating an inclusive organisation. This programme is an opportunity for us to lead the way in fostering an innovative and growing city.

Council has worked with groups such as the Network of Skilled Migrants Manawatū towards creating a welcoming city. This work identified the importance of meaningful employment for successful settlement outcomes.
