He Ara Kotahi lights up

Thursday October 31 2019

The city’s newest landmark will be lit in all its glory from Monday night.

Photo shows the bridge lit up at night.

When He Ara Kotahi bridge opened in June, only the handrail lights were switched on. The rest of the lights were held up in transit.

The lights for the rest of the bridge arrived six weeks ago and have now been installed. We’ve also installed large LED trees that light the plaza area at night.

The lighting is a warm blue to respect the history of the site, where a huge battle occurred in the 1820s. It's tucked away so it’s almost invisible during the day. When lit, the bridge looks as though it is floating on the river.

The Palmerston North City Council’s Chief Infrastructure Officer, Tom Williams, says the lights will be switched on at 8pm on Monday night.

“We’ve been thrilled to see He Ara Kotahi becoming the city’s most popular attraction, and we know the new lights will add to its landmark status. The new lighting is breathtaking and intimate and we know the people of Palmy are going to fall in love with the bridge all over again.”

He says the lights are being turned on on Monday so that people can see them when they watch the fireworks on Tuesday night.
